Abstract
This study was attempted to provide the basic data for nursing intervention to improve the psychosociological adaptation of the cancer patient by examining relationship among health locus of control, family support, and hopelessness. The subjects consisted of 60 cancer patients admitted to K university hospital in Taegu. The data were obtained by structured questionnaires which contained the tool that Oh(1994) modified Multidimensional Health Locus of Control(MHLC) instrument developed by Wallston, Wallston, and Devellis(1978), the Family support tool made by TAE(1985), and the tool that WON(1987) modified Hopelessness scale developed by Beck et al.(1967). The data was analyzed by percentage, mean, Pearson-Correlation Coefficiency, t-test, ANOVA, and Stepwise multiple regression analysis using the SAS program. The results were as follows: Among the component of health locus of control, the mean score of internal health locus of control was 24,.40, the mean score of powerful others health locus of control was 23.92, and the mean score of chance health locus of control was 17.77. The mean score of family support was 34.85 and the mean score of hopelessness was 42.43. There was significantly positive correlation between chance health locus of control and hopelessness and negative correlation between internal health locus of control and family support, but there wasn¡¯t significantly correlation between family support and hopelessness. General characteristics related health locus of control were education level, religion, and experience of operation, general characteristics related hopelessness were religion, economic level, and radiotherapy, and general characteristics related family support were marital status and experience of operation. The results of multiple regression analysis suggested that existence or not of religion, economic status, powerful others health locus of control, and existence of not of job were predictive of hopelessness. In conclusion, another nursing research identifying the factors that have influence on hopelessness are needed. And it is required to develop specific nursing interventions including not only family support but also religious approach to alleviate hopelessness of cancer patients.
